Solving Lost Apple ID Issues with Jamf Push Notification Certificate

In the world of mobile device management, losing access to an Apple ID can be a significant headache. Recently, our team faced this exact issue when our APNs portal access was lost due to a forgotten Apple ID. Luckily, we were able to work with Apple Support and Jamf Support to resolve the problem quickly.

The first step was to regain access to the APNs portal by transferring it to another corporate Apple ID. This process took around three hours, which is relatively fast considering the complexity of the issue. We had a small number of macOS devices that needed to be re-enrolled, but with no iOS devices available for remote connection, we couldn't perform a manual re-enrollment.

That's when Jamf Support stepped in and provided valuable insight and guidance. They helped us understand that our current setup would make it difficult to re-enroll each user individually, which would have been a significant disruption to end-users due to the number of policies involved.

For those who are experiencing issues with re-enrollment, there is a workaround that involves running `sudo jamf removeFramework`, followed by `sudo rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone`, and then rebooting. This creates a fake user, allows for re-enrollment, and then deletes the fake user. You can also try using `sudo jamf mdm` or `sudo jamf manage` to see if that resolves the issue.

Unfortunately, we were unable to find a simple way to update an existing MDM profile to use a new APN cert or re-enroll computers in the background. Our team is completely remote, and setting up time with each employee would be incredibly difficult.

In our case, the original Apple ID used to create the certificate was no longer accessible due to the departure of the team that created it. We were forced to use a new Apple ID and generate a new cert, which meant we had to renew our APN certificate in Jamf Cloud.

Overall, while losing access to an Apple ID can be frustrating, there are resources available to help resolve the issue quickly. By working with Apple Support and Jamf Support, we were able to get back up and running in no time.
